Hairballs and Muddy PawsThe months of “newlywed bliss” will be one of the most treasured times of your life. For many of you, it will be a time when you’ll find yourselves house-free, kid-free, and pet-free (or some combination of the above). Your flexible finances and free time will allow you to book last minute travel or party with friends late into the night. Being footloose and fancy free definitely has its rewards.
There comes a time in married life when the topic of getting a pet arises. Some people are dog people, some are cat people. It could get even more difficult than that. Did you marry a fish fanatic? Or a secret snake lover? At this point, there are two important decisions to be made.
1) Is it the right time for a pet?
In my opinion, waiting a year or more before getting a pet is best. This gurantees that you aren't rushing into another life altering event before adjusting to your new marriage.
2) What type of pet best fits your lifestyle?
In the order of dependent pets, it goes fish, cats then dogs. If you jet out of town for the weekends, maybe consider one of the first two. If you are both active and have time for walks and lots of attention, maybe a dog is what you are looking for.
Often, the longing for a pet can cloud your best judgment. Take some time to determine if the two of you are ready for the time and energy commitment of a pet. The joy they bring to our lives is priceless but remember what comes with it… hairballs and muddy paws.

I already had a little Yorkie before we got married. And I think my hubby might love her more than me sometimes! If you already have a pet it is really important that your partner gets along with them!
