Ask Marvin-Pushed to the Limit

Dear Marvin,
HELP! We have sent out our invites and are getting our RSVPs back now. The only problem is that some people are COMPLETELY ignoring who we have addressed the invitation to. For example, we addressed the invite to Mr. & Mrs. Smith even though they have 3 children. We are trying to keep our guest list limited because we are running out of room in the hall and we are on a budget. Unfortunately Mr. & Mrs. Smith RSVP'de for not only themselves but also their three children! What can we do? I don't want to be rude, but we really can't afford to let everybody just bring whoever they want! Thanks for the help!
Signed,
Pushed to the Limit

Dear Pushed to the Limit,
...ah, the joys of wedding planing! This is one of the most difficult and sticky areas. I have two ideas for you. First, you either have to just let this go and work with your hall coordinator to get the most room out of your space. OR you have to start making the calls. These are not fun calls but they can be very necessary. If you can't afford it or you don't have the room, you have to make the calls. I would call the person that you have the closest relationship with and just explain to them the situation. Be careful though. Don't tell them that you aren't having children at the reception if your 5 year old cousin is going to be there! Just be honest with them and explain the situation. I can't guarantee someone won't be upset or hurt but you just be kind and firm and it WILL eventually all work itself out!
Good luck!!

We had a HUGE problem with this (ie-families invited as Mr/Mrs rsvping for them, their kids, in-laws and closest cousins (kid you not)). We waited until all had rsvp'd to see what was left--there are always people who just can't come. Since our budget accomodated those not in attendance we allowed a a little more than the same amount of the un-invited rsvp's to attend, prioritized by family affilliation. The remaining we broke up into categries--if the family who over RSVP'd were on his mother's list, for example, she had to call them and explain the situation and let them know the space limitation, etc. It worked really well and no one's feelings were hurt. Some people just get confused by the fill in the blank "# who will attend" line on the rsvp card.
