When Mike and I were in the initial planning stage of our wedding we were seriously throwing around the idea of a gag cocktail hour. Here's what we were thinking: peanut butter and jelly mini sandwiches, cocktail weenies, salami trumpets filled with peanut butter... there were several others, really more like kid food than anything, but it made us laugh to think of our guests eating this funny food and then sitting down to an amazing 7 course dinner.

We wound up being a bit more serious, in favor of wine parings, but it is still a fun idea.

Why can't you do childhood favorite foods?

Peanut butter and banana sandwiches, mac and cheese, fried chicken or fish bites, grilled cheese, french fries, sloppy joes or sliders, tomato soup.

There are lots of upscale and fanciful ways to execute these fun, nostalgic foods.

Remember, it's your party dang it! If these are some of your favorite foods, more likely than not they are also many of your guest's favorites!

This is also a great way to include your heritage!
