Cloud Nine - Communication Is Key

What Did You Say?

Communication can be one of the most difficult aspects of any relationship and is often cited as a primary issue among married couples. Communicating effectively can definitely be a tricky task to accomplish. There are several criteria to keep in mind when talking with your partner:
• Listen
We all have an innate desire to have our thoughts and ideas validated. Make sure you are really listening to what your partner is saying to you. Acknowledging what your spouse has said not only shows them that you are listening, but also shows that you understand what they are saying. Also, wait for the appropriate moment to converse. It is difficult to listen to what your partner is saying if you are thinking of what you are going to say next. If what you need to say is important, you will remember when it is your turn to speak.
• Body Language
When you and your spouse are discussing an issue, be sure to give them your complete attention. This means face them when you are talking and make eye contact. Also, minimize distractions in your surrounding area so that you can focus directly on one another.
• Honesty
It is vital to the health of your relationship that you be honest with one another when communicating. If something is bothering you, tell them. It isn’t fair to you or your partner to withhold how you feel or to be dishonest.
• Expectations
Vocalize what you expect from each other in your relationship as far as roles and responsibilities are concerned. Be clear and concise about what you want from each other- don’t leave anything up for speculation.

There are also other ways of communicating: non verbal communication can be just as effective and powerful as using words. Tell your partner you love them with a passionate kiss and embrace. If you feel more comfortable with a pen, write down some important thoughts and ideas you would like to share. It doesn’t matter what methods you employ, as long as you are communicating effectively with one another.
