Survey Says - Did You Take Your Husband's Last Name?

Did you take your husband's last name? If so, when did you change it and was the process difficult? If not, how did your husband react to you not taking his last name?

I did not take my husbands last name, it is Smith and we already have problems with his identity being stolen. He was fine with it although I told him if he wanted me to I would change my name. Also keep in mind I am 47 and although this is my first marriage, my identity and career are tied up in my maiden name. It would be different if we were going to have children, but we are not. - Michelle, married March 2007

I did take his name, and I waited to start the process until after we got back from the honeymoon since we traveled out of the country, and we know how tough it can be to travel these days, so I didn’t want to get caught with one form of ID with one name, and another form with a different name. I am still working on changing my name, and probably will for some time, but all of the major stuff is done. A friend emailed me with this website that made it super easy to get the process started, it helped a great deal. (www.angelfire.com/ma/dnsassoc/need.html and www.angelfire.com/ma/dnsassoc/tools.html).- Melanie, married June 2007

I did take my husband’s last name and I made the change the week we got back from our honeymoon. The process of changing my name was not difficult, it was just time consuming. - Nona, married August 2007

Yes, I changed my last name, but to Brown-Kinell because I have a business with my maiden name. My husband was perfectly fine with whatever I did, however I know it makes him proud that I wanted his last name. Yes, the process was very difficult, especially if you own your own business because not only does your personal stuff have to be changed, but all of the business stuff too. -Lauren, married May 2007

I have not changed my name at this time, but I may add his last name in the future. My husband encouraged me to choose the name I felt most comfortable with, while insisting that he prefers me to keep my name the way it was when we first met. - Amanda, married October 2007

Cloud Nine - Get To Know Each Other

Be sure to discuss your personal goals with your soon-to-be to make sure that the two of you are on the same page to avoid communication blocks later in your relationship. Things to discuss: kids, financial debt, savings goals, retirement saving, religious beliefs, personal ethics, final resting. There's nothing that says that you have to agree on everything, but it's nice to know where your partner stands.

Trend - Screen Me In

Setting up a screen with shots of husband and wife together throughout their relationship is a cute trend. Guests can check out your candid shots and trips you've shared, family gathering and romantic retreats. It helps them to get to know you even better and can be good conversation starters!Photo courtesy of The Memory Journalists

Cloud Nine - If Girls Only Knew...

Men cannot read between the lines. If you are mad at them, they may not know it. If you are sad, they may not pick up on this – it’s similar to how they might not recognize a new hair cut. You have to tell them how you feel, you can’t expect them to automatically know.

Men do not multi-task very well. Women innately know how to do ten things at once. Men complete one task at a time before moving on.

When men say they are sorry, they mean it. Women need to learn to accept this faster, let go and don't lock their mistake in "the vault" for later use.

*Disclaimer: These are merely generalizations and we realize by no means apply to every man.

Survey Says - Did You Live With Your Fiance First?

Did you live with your fiancé before you got married? If so, do you think this helped into the transition as newlyweds? If not, did you have any surprises as you moved into together that you’d share with another future bride?

Yes, I think it helped with the transition of the day to day living together stuff, but I think it also takes away from all the "new" things our parents/grandparent experienced. I think that's why so many newlyweds are so upset over the excitement”of the wedding being gone because life is back to normal for those of us who have already experienced cohabitating with your husband.
- Lauren, married May 2007

We did live to together before the wedding and I firmly believe that it helped with the transition as newlyweds. It would have been more difficult sharing a living space while adjusting to sharing everything else as a married couple had we not had some practice beforehand.
- Amanda, married October 2007

I did live with my fiancé before the wedding; however we also had a roommate up until a month before the wedding. I think it was helpful in that it was one less thing to stress us - we didn’t have to deal with moving on top of the wedding. And having our roommate move out close to the wedding made it different enough that we could feel like were starting our own life together.
- Julie, married September 2007

No we didn't live together. The surprise to me has been that this man who was so self sufficient before we got married is suddenly not! Weird. Also I didn't realize what a neat freak I was until I moved in with my messy hubby.

Ignite the Flame - Love Yourself

One of the best ways to fan the love fire between you and your beau is to be your best “you” possible. We all know that when we make time for ourselves and enjoy a little pampering along the way, we are much happier and feel more fulfilled (and much more likely to contribute to our husband’s happiness and fulfillment!). It can be difficult to balance married life with the routines and activities from your pre-wedded life. By staying true to yourself and nurturing that amazing woman on the inside, you will be giving your spouse the very best version of you possible.

Cloud Nine - Combining Your $

Brides Magazine recently printed some helpful tips when it comes to combining your money. Check it out!
1. Create a budget that you both feel comfortable with to eliminate any surprises.
2. Work together to plan your financial future and set savings goals-experts recommend setting aside 15% of your gross salary for retirement.
3. Determine how you want to handle your banking and whether you want to open a joint account.
4. Change your name and address as necessary on important documents and including your social security card, driver's license, and credit cards.
5. Update your beneficiaries on investment and savings accounts, insurance policies, pension plans, 401 (k) and IRA.
6. Organize all important legal and financial documents and keep them in a protected place in case of an emergency.
7. Reconsider your insurance needs-you may qualify for discounted rates by merging all policies with a single provider.
8. Inform employers of your new status and make changes to benefits plans if necessary.
9. Decide whether you want to file joint or separate tax returns.

Ignite the Flame - Dance the Night Away

Women love a man who can dance...so if you didn't take dance lessons for your first dance at your wedding...why not make it a Friday date followed by dinner! You just might find that waltzing brings out a fiery woman just as easily as swaying those hips to a latin beat.

Cloud Nine - If Girls Only Knew...Men Are Self-Conscious Too

If Girls Only Knew...
Men like to be complimented about their looks, just as much as women do. Make sure you let him know when a particular shirt brings out the color in his eyes. When you are getting ready to go out for a night on the town, make sure to tell him how hot he looks too. Just because it only took him 15 minutes, doesn't mean he doesn't care about his looks. Throw him a compliment or two and a few extra sweetie squeezes.

A 75-Year Old Wedding Dream

After 75 years of marriage, Mamerta Cabale, 90, got the chance to have her dream white wedding meeting 102-year-old husband, Sabas Cabale at the altar. The couple was married in a civil ceremony in the Philippines originally in 1933 when Mamerta, a 14-year-old convent girl eloped with Sabas, a chauffeur. Mamerta always wanted a church ceremony and to wear a flowing white gown down the altar. She was able to fulfill her dream on this amazing day at St. Aidan's church in Australia. She stood with her bridal bouquet and a striking smile next to Sabas as they said their vows. Her key to a lasting marriage: "Every day I tell him that I love him. When he was angry I just listen, then we go somewhere quiet where just the wind blows and I ask why he is angry. We talk and then it is all right."

How could we not share this story...it's amazing! Congratulations to Mamerta & Sabas Cabale!

For Richer, For Poorer? Who Says!

Usually we like to share exciting, uplifting, heartwarming stories about love, relationships and weddings...but, I just had to share this interesting story and get some feedback on it.

A bride-to-be, RoseMary Shell, who was dumped by her fiance with a note in the bathroom (reminds me of the Sex and the City episode with the sticky note from Burger...anyhow, I digress) has sued him for breaking his promise. “Primarily because he made a promise to me and I relied on that promise and gave up a lot of things because of that promise,” Shell explained. “And I suffered significantly for it,” she added. “I just felt like people shouldn’t be allowed to do people that way.” She was awarded $150,000 in a Georgia court! This was an on again, off again relationship that ended in a legal battle. He claims he got cold feet after learning of her excessive outstanding debts, while she claims that he was well aware of her financial state of affairs the whole time.

What will she do with her 2K engagement ring? Sell it. "It means nothing now," says RoseMary.

This couple seems preoccupied with money, him with her debt and now her with her "rightfully owed financial compensation". What is it that they say? For better, for worse; for richer, for poorer; in sickness and in health...".

Read the entire article at MSNBC . Vote now on the poll to the right. Should she have received $150,000 settlement?

Ignite the Flame - Movie Night

Go to the local movie rental store and rent two movies... a total chick flick that has a sappy sweet ending, and then a shoot-em up bang-bang guy movie where things blow up for about 75% of the movie. Watch them together. He will love that you are willing to sit through the gore fest and you just might find that you like it :0) and what's better than you’re guy watching a love story with you. You may have to flip a coin to see whose movie goes in first.

Cloud Nine - Sharing Responsibility

So you both work outside of the house. Does getting hitched mean you are now the "little lady" and you must do all of the cooking, cleaning, and laundry too?? No it does not. Work out a schedule that will work for the both of you. Maybe for the laundry, you do the clothes but the linens are his chore. How about you dust but he can vacuum? And the cooking, do it together, it will be a great time for you two to talk about your day. You will find that he might enjoy helping out around the house.Photo courtesy of The Memory Journalists

Ignite the Flame - Cards Are Key

Cards can mean more than flowers. It's not the grandeurs of the gift, it's the thought that counts. Fellas, pick up a card at the store on your way home and drop it in her purse the next morning, leave it on the bathroom counter, on her pillow or in her car. This small romantic gesture can gain you big recognition in her book and will come back to you. Photo courtesy of The Memory Journalists

Cloud Nine - He's Not A Mind Reader

Men can not read between the lines. If you are mad at them, they may not know it. If you are sad, they may not pick up on this – it’s similar to how they might not recognize a new hair cut. Most men don't observe us that closely. You have to tell them how you feel, you can’t expect them to automatically know.

Survey Says - Did You Go Into Your New Marriage With Debt?

Did you and your fiancé go into your new marriage with debt from your wedding? Was this an issue in any way?

Nope, everything was paid for. Had we been responsible for paying for any more of the wedding that we did, we would have had a much different wedding than we did (thank you dads!)
--Melanie, married June 2007

We did and do have debt from the wedding but it has not been an issue between the two of. We are just annoyed how long it is taking us to pay back! --Nona, married August 2007

I would consider myself a bit more frugal than my newly acquired husband. We have had a few disagreements regarding finances with relation to our wedding. In the end though, I don’t know where we could have cut costs. I wouldn’t want to change a single thing.
--Amanda, married October 2007

We did put a lot of stuff on a credit card specifically for the wedding, rather than saving and purchasing with cash. I wish we would have been a little better at that.
