I am SO excited to be contributing to Dynamite Weddings as a recently engaged bride!! Here we are just moments after, on the coast in Big Sur!!
Here I was fooling around with the camera, practicing ring shots :)!
Since our engagement in November we are planning diligently to get married this August. It's been fun, but trying at the same time, working to keep perspective on what's important to us and still plan a really fun event! To read more about our engagement story, check out my past blog post.Photo provided by The Memory Journalists

I am excited to share that we are planning a real Dynamite wedding, meaning all the professionals involved so far are Dynamite Experts. Well, our wedding will be an opportunity to showcase a real Dynamite wedding where couples can see that those we recommend are truly trusted professionals. While Mr. Detonator and I would be grateful to work with all the Dynamite Experts, we could only choose a few for our 100 guest wedding. The experts we are excited to be working with are:

Spotlight On Interview- Sheffield Multimedia

We were able to ask Phill, of Sheffield Multimedia, and ask him a few questions to get to know him better. We wanted to share what we learned about Phill with all of you.
The 3 things I can’t work a wedding without
- A game plan. I require a minimum of 60 minutes with my clients before the wedding to talk about their vision for a perfect video. Knowing whether or not a clients likes something classic and traditional or fun and contemporary is key going in to each customized production.
- Knowing the other vendors and giving them/getting from them a heads up. Having a team-player mentality going into an event really raises the quality level and makes for a more pleasant experience. I’ve made some great friends by just giving them a call/e-mail before the event and introducing myself.
- My magic equipment bag: cameras, adapters, tapes, batteries cords, Advil, muscle relaxers, and the master itinerary.

The site/blog I visit most frequentlyEngadget.com. It is a constantly updated technology blog that deals with things from mobile video delivery, to high definition trends and fancy new toys to buy.

My favorite movie is
…The Shawshank Redemption, nuff said!

The first cinematic masterpiece I ever shot
… In my last semester in college, I filmed a parody of MTV’s the Real World, using friends and fellow students. It was shown to an audience of 50 peers and so well received that I knew video was my future.

If I made a documentary it would be about… I get such a kick out of green energy, I’d like to explore some new exciting trends on technologies like solar, tidal, wind, and hydroelectric renewable energy.

My best feature or trait is
… I am always on the hunt for some new and exciting footage. I never leave an event saying that “I wish I got more footage.” I am constantly on the go, and always want to keep shooting, keep striving for new and dynamic shots. Also, I am tall! I can see over crowds of people to get my shots :)

If I wasn’t a videographer, I would be
… My grandmother was a wedding photographer in the 1920’s, my mom a landscape painter, so I cannot escape my creative destiny! I would probably be a graphic designer or marketing go-to guy.

The wedding I enjoyed most last year
… Every wedding has its charm, and I remember each bride and groom vividly. My most recent memory was that of my New Years Eve wedding. It was perhaps the most atomically decorated, tricked out, staffed, coordinated, and shot wedding than I’ve ever seen.

The place I go to learn about ways to advance my business… I learn a lot from industry leaders in similar fields to my own. I’ve attended seminars on filmmaking, photography, lighting, and even how to mix music together as a DJ would. Using a composite of all this knowledge, I am able to up the ante on wedding video.

I can’t get through my day without… Tea. Currently my passion is white blueberry tea; on slow days I prefer a hearty black tea, and for mellowing out time its green tea.

My favorite producer is
…I am a big fan of the Wachowski brothers, they have a way of incorporating asian visual elements with western flair and grit to tell their message.

The YouTube video I never get tired of
… Right now it is Pork & Beans by Weezer…all your internet celebs, all in once place!

I usually sleep… 10 p.m. till 5:30 a.m. I am one of the 7 people in the world who are true morning people That gives me a few hours to make a daily checklist and crank out some work before the phone starts to ring and before it gets to be one thousand degrees outside.

I prefer to capture
… Candid, happy moments…as unobtrusively and naturally as possible.

My goal for this year is… To constantly improve my production quality, and have clients say, “Is this all I paid for my finished video? I would have paid you double!”

Themes - Hawaiian Reception

Laurie and Eric married in January 2008 in Hawaii with about 25 or 30 close family and friends attending. They decided to throw a Sacramento reception for about 150 guests, the month following. They love great wine, fabulous food, travel and they especially enjoyed snorkeling. Laurie and Eric wanted to bring back some of the Hawaiian feel to Sacramento, so a wonderful tropical experience was created in the middle of downtown Sacramento at the Sterling Hotel. February 2008

Walls were uplighted in blues and a moving water pattern on the ceiling made it feel like everyone was “under the sea.” Guest tables were covered in an iridescent green/blue table linen, and the head table, positioned in the center of the room, was covered in a shimmery ivory linen.

The flowers were outstanding! The use of tall trumpet vases filled with crystal gel and fuchsia LED lights were topped with large monstera leaves, white orchids (with hanging clear crystals) and the bottom of the vase held a perfect fuchsia catelaya orchid. The stacked wedding cake was beautifully decorated with more orchids and sat atop a glass pedestal with floating orchids and white LEDs. Icing seashells encircled the layers; they were the same design as the wedding invitations. White sand, seashells and candles adorned all tables. Fresh leis were worn by the guests (flown in from the islands).

The buffet was a feast that included a whole
roasted pig (this was the one main wish of Eric), and also teriyaki grilled chicken, fresh stir-fry vegetables, jumbo prawns, tropical rice pilaf, and even Chinese chicken salad served in “take-out boxes” with chopsticks!

A continuous playing loop of their wedding photos displayed on a flat-screen monitor, so everybody could see how beautiful their Hawaiian wedding was on the beaches of Oahu. Because the couple is into music and wanted a “rockin’ party,” the evening started off with a Polynesian drum group and two Tahitian dancers who thrilled the guests with several dances. The evening ended with a packed dance floor as guests were entertained by a 10 piece rock band. Laurie and Eric said their Hawaiian wedding was beautiful, but their Sacramento “Hawaiian” reception was the most fun they’ve ever had.

Tip - Understand Your Final Wedding Video Early

Remember to consider what you want your finished wedding video to look like. Videographers have different styles and not every one will appeal to you, so be sure to get a copy of a demo DVD or a full wedding video from several companies. Beyond paying attention to steady camerawork, smooth pans and zooms, and crystal clear audio, you should be aware of the editing style. The best type of editing is invisible, that is to say you shouldn’t notice it unless you are particularly looking for it. Watch for a clean picture without grain or distortion, crisp slow motion, and beautiful bright colorful images.

Trend - You Tube

It is truly the You Tube generation's time to get married. With millions of videos viewed everyday on the internet, why should you expect anything less from your wedding video? Online video is the best way to show friend and family who didn't have a chance to attend your wedding a chance to relive it, if only a very small portion. No longer will a bride have to buy additional copies of her video or attach large video files via e-mail. With online media, over 80% of the computers connected to the internet can view your wedding video masterpiece.

Trend - Download Your Wedding

A new stylish and contemporary way to deliver video is on players such as the Apple video ipod. You can view it anytime and anywhere you want in high quality.
With a video or player such as an ipod, a bride can enjoy her video on car rides, flights, or even at her lunch hour. Some video companies include an ipod with a certain packages, and will pre-load your video onto it so it can be enjoyed right away.

Tip - Meet Your Day Of Videographer

After narrowing down your top ideal videographers, ask to speak to the exact person filming your wedding. Some companies hire contractor videographers to film multiple events in one day, so if you can, get the guarantee of your specific videographer in writing on your contract. Make sure the samples videos you are watching were filmed by this person.

Trend - Bringing Photos to Life

Unlike cheesy slide shows from years past that remind you of your aunt's trip to Lake Gloomy, new 3D slide shows bring photos to life by moving them around in three dimensions. Photos are brought 'alive' when the people in the photo move independently from the background. You may have seen this technique on the Discovery or History channel as a way to make old photos seems alive!

Tip - Get it in Writing!

Be aware of how long after your wedding date you should expect your finished video as videographer turnaround times can vary from 4-6 weeks to 6-9 months. You should be comfortable with this estimate before booking as videos are usually completed in the order filmed through the course of the year. Insist on getting an estimated date from your videographer in writing on your contract. Some companies can also offer a rush service to ensure that you receive your video in much less time.

Trend - High Def is Definitely In!

High Definition Video is in! Properly composed and polished, a high definition wedding video can feel more realistic than actually being there. High definition by definition is more vivid, brighter, clearer, and more dynamic than could ever be allowed previously. Even if you do not have an HDTV yet, the finished product will still look better than video shot just 3 years ago. This technology separates the men from the boys, as high definition wedding films can feel more and more like an actual Hollywood production, rather than the shaky-cam antics of Uncle Bob.

Tip - Contracts, contracts, contracts...

Put all the details of your agreement with your videographer in writing. The contract should cover the date, ceremony and reception locations, special add-ons, fees, coverage hours, number of cameras, and number of copies. Also make sure you discuss the difference between manned and unmanned cameras. Some packages say two or more cameras are included, but might include only one operator, and the remaining camera is put on a stationary tripod.

Trend - "Our Love Story"

Sometimes the cameras will roll even before the wedding day to make something called "A Love Story."
A love story is the telling of how they met, fell in love, and planned their wedding. Depending on their tastes, these videos can be serious and romantic, slapstick and funny, or somewhere in between.

These are often shown at the reception for the guests to and gives guests a chance to get to know the couple a little bit better. It can add a little something special to the wedding day.

Tip - More than just a Cameraman

It is very important to find a wedding videographer with years of wedding video experience. TV show cameramen, film producers, and corporate videographers understand the technical requirements of their equipment, but do not specialize in weddings and events. Since your wedding is a live event, your videographer should be able to react and troubleshoot any incidentals that occur. This instinctive skill can only be learned through years of specific wedding experience.
