Themes - Hawaiian Reception

Laurie and Eric married in January 2008 in Hawaii with about 25 or 30 close family and friends attending. They decided to throw a Sacramento reception for about 150 guests, the month following. They love great wine, fabulous food, travel and they especially enjoyed snorkeling. Laurie and Eric wanted to bring back some of the Hawaiian feel to Sacramento, so a wonderful tropical experience was created in the middle of downtown Sacramento at the Sterling Hotel. February 2008

Walls were uplighted in blues and a moving water pattern on the ceiling made it feel like everyone was “under the sea.” Guest tables were covered in an iridescent green/blue table linen, and the head table, positioned in the center of the room, was covered in a shimmery ivory linen.

The flowers were outstanding! The use of tall trumpet vases filled with crystal gel and fuchsia LED lights were topped with large monstera leaves, white orchids (with hanging clear crystals) and the bottom of the vase held a perfect fuchsia catelaya orchid. The stacked wedding cake was beautifully decorated with more orchids and sat atop a glass pedestal with floating orchids and white LEDs. Icing seashells encircled the layers; they were the same design as the wedding invitations. White sand, seashells and candles adorned all tables. Fresh leis were worn by the guests (flown in from the islands).

The buffet was a feast that included a whole roasted pig (this was the one main wish of Eric), and also teriyaki grilled chicken, fresh stir-fry vegetables, jumbo prawns, tropical rice pilaf, and even Chinese chicken salad served in “take-out boxes” with chopsticks!

A continuous playing loop of their wedding photos displayed on a flat-screen monitor, so everybody could see how beautiful their Hawaiian wedding was on the beaches of Oahu. Because the couple is into music and wanted a “rockin’ party,” the evening started off with a Polynesian drum group and two Tahitian dancers who thrilled the guests with several dances. The evening ended with a packed dance floor as guests were entertained by a 10 piece rock band. Laurie and Eric said their Hawaiian wedding was beautiful, but their Sacramento “Hawaiian” reception was the most fun they’ve ever had.

Trend - Uplighting

The new trend in lighting is beyond an overhead truss or T-bar system. With our upscale events, we've been offering “up-lighting.” Instead of lights that just beam down on the dance floor, we spread our lights out more evenly throughout the room and cast color and designs throughout the room, and paint the ceiling with moving colors and shapes, project gobo/images or names and initials onto walls and ceilings and splash color on pillars and recessed ceilings and brighten walls and corners. The dance floor comes alive with energetic intelligent lighting using colors and designs. The room then takes on a completely different feel.

Tip - Honor Loved Ones

Honoring special people in the couple's life can have a great effect on the family and the reception. Consider having special family members introduced at the beginning of the reception. Acknowledgment of them at the event will make a big difference during the reception and also later in life.Tip provided by Music on the Move DJs

Trend - DJ Interaction

DJ interaction with style is making a big entrance. Brides have seen what happens when there is no DJ interaction. An MC provides not only direction to the event, but also engaging the guests in activities and (although I hate to use the word) games, ice breakers, and other methods of participation.Trend provided by Music on the Move DJs

Tip - Have Fun With Tradition

When throwing the bouquet or garter, usually the DJ will count to 3 or something like that. As an alternative, why not have the bride or the groom do the counting. As another twist, you may have your guests do the count down. If your groom is a football fan, wrap the garter around a (soft) football and hike or pass it. There is not a guy around that will intentionally let a thrown football become an incomplete pass!

Tip - Wear Your Ring On Your Right Hand

What do you do with the engagement ring during your ceremony? Simply slip it on a finger on the right hand until after the groom places the wedding ring on your finger. Then transfer your engagement ring next to your wedding ring which will always be closest to your heart.

Trend - Themed Receptions

Several times this year we have had couples who have chosen a special theme for their reception. Disneyland themes, Hawaiian, Star Wars, your favorite novel or movie title, and more are all great ideas. It is always a great way to plan food, decorations, lighting, and music. Trend - Creative Intros

The grand entrance of the wedding party and the bride and groom are getting more spiced up as personalized introductions become more popular. The final entrance of the Bride and groom with creatively written introductions will arouse your guests and bring them together in the event and to their feet.

Tip - Closing Song

The bride and grooms’ last dance of the evening can create a positive close to the evening. A reception should not end like a night at the bar with the lights going on and the sounds of "Everybody go home". A good master of ceremonies can bring all the family and friends together for a memorable last dance of the evening. Think of the last dance as the beginning of your new life together with all your family around you. Choose a song that will be “your” farewell dance, whether it be extremely upbeat or soft and romantic. The choice is yours.

Trend - Cake Smashing A No...No

Cake smashing is usually a thing of the past. Brides are less likely to even consider getting cake in their hair, on their dress or up their nose. While many may laugh, sometimes it is just from embarrassment. Don’t mess with the queen of the party.Trend provided by Music on the Move

Tip - Music For Every Moment

Music is becoming more important throughout the night for all of the traditions. Choose a couple different fun songs to be played while you walk to the cake table, cut the cake and feed each other that bite or more.
Play another song immediately after feeding each other. It will eliminate the dead air that is so common, and help to maintain the energy in the room

Trend - Choreograph Your First Dance

Many brides and grooms have choreographed their First Dance. This can be as simple as taking dance lessons or being very creative on their own.Taking the next step into the medley of several songs with a different dance step to each segment is very entertaining for all of your guests.
More couples have recently found out how much fun it can be when their DJ creates that montage of their favorite songs, and incorporating that into their first dance. Be sure you have your videographer ready to capture those special moments, not only for you and your guests, but as a memory for many years to come.

Tip - Choose an A Team With An A Game

The bride's dance with her dad and the groom’s dance with his mom are still a very important part of a wedding. These spotlight dances can be extended to include the future in-laws, grandparents, and any other important person in their life. When selecting your vendors, you will want to choose an A team that will work well together, so important moments like this aren't distracted by other vendor requests. Be sure your MC will provide and agenda for each member of the team.

Trend - Daddy & Me

The Daddy-daughter dance is a special few moments the bride shares with her dad. By choosing the right song, it can be an unforgettable experience.

Often a pre-written and recorded message, carefully edited into that song, will bring an emotional level to the dance that is incredible.
