Tip - Create A Mission Statement

Planning a wedding can be challenging, especially if you have never done it before. Consider starting your planning process by first creating a mission statement. Start by creating a clear sense of purpose. You can do this by finishing this statement, “The type of wedding day that I want to create is…” You can always refer back to your mission statement to see if that next item on your list is in line with what you want to create. You will be amazed at how much easier your wedding plans (and budget) will come together once you have a clear picture of what that looks like.Next, begin your plans with the end in mind. For example: If the type of wedding day you want to create is a relaxed social environment, this tells me that the entertainment takes a back seat to socializing and conversation. You might also create a relaxed timeline by scheduling more time for conversation and less for dancing. Remember, this is based on the type of wedding day that you want to create.

Trend - DVD Montage

DVD Montage - DVD Montages can be done in many different ways. The most common would be the story line of your life. Not to be confused with a PowerPoint presentation or a picture slideshow. A professionally produced DVD Montage will captivate everyone’s attention and spark many emotions as your friends and family share the story-line of your lives. You provide the pictures as it is elegantly produced and edited to music. It is then shown on a big screen and played through your DJs sound system giving your guests the whole movie experience (minus the popcorn). It is also a great way to honor those loved ones who have passed, without creating a somber moment. It also allows the other side of the family to get to know you in ways that they didn’t before. Family members love to be taken on a short trip down memory lane and your guest will definitely consider it one of the highlights of the evening.

Trend - Light Up Your Reception w/ A Monogram

Monogram Projector - One feature that is becoming increasingly more popular is the monogram projector. A Monogram Projector is a light fixture that projects a custom cut image called a “gobo.” If you are going to be sending out custom invitations, this is a way for you to have that same design projected somewhere at your reception. It can be shown on the wall behind your cake, behind the head table and, if the venue supports it, down on the dance floor. Imagine the image of you two dancing around your monogram for your first dance. Ask your DJ if he can have a gobo pattern custom cut of your design.

Tip - Designate Your Coordinating Vendor

You will want to designate one vendor who will responsible for the tempo and flow of your wedding day. Once you have designated that person, you will want to inform all of the other vendors who that person is prior to your wedding day. This lets them know who to go to with questions or concerns. The person that you choose should be the one vendor that has the most contact with you and has a complete understanding of what is expected. Designating one person and notifying all of the other vendors ensures that everyone is on the same page and reduces the chances of confusion or conflicting agendas.

Tip - Discuss Placement With Your DJ

Where should your DJ set up? A major part of the DJ's job is to get as many of your guests on the same page as possible and we do this through making announcements. Whether it be for the grand entrance, cake cutting or simply asking them to take their seats for dinner, it is very important to make sure that your DJ is in a central location. If your guests cannot hear the announcements, you run the risk of having an event that does not flow smoothly.
If you have control where the bar is to be set up, it would be great to have the dance floor and the bar as close together as possible. (At least in the same room.) Not everyone is going to dance and that is okay. By putting the bar in one room and the dance floor in another, however, you are completely disconnecting the two. By putting them in the same room this allows everyone to enjoy watching the activities on the dance floor and the laughter that might go along with it.

Trend - Creating Your Nontraditional Ceremony

You have scouted out the perfect ceremony site, and the both of you have agreed, you are going to exchange your vows outside of the church. You have chosen a nontraditional setting for your ceremony so why not choose nontraditional music? Holding your ceremony outside of the church gives you complete freedom to be as creative as you like. So have some fun. It is becoming more popular for brides and grooms to choose music that is unique to their individual personalities and tastes. It may be that there is a story behind their song choice or that the lyrics themselves tell a story. Just as a movie soundtrack has a musical score; you too can create the same type of theme. There may be a soft piano or string version of your first dance song that your DJ can play for your wedding march. DJs have the ability to be as creative as you need them to be.

Trend - Set the Tone With Lighting

Decorating With Light - You’ve seen it in the magazines, you have seen it on the wedding television programs, and it’s that cool lighting that turns an ordinary room into something extraordinary. Whether you are creating a theme party or an elegant wedding, Ambient or Theatrical Lighting will set the tone for your guests at your reception. It can create a soft candle light glow or cool patterns up on the ceiling.
Lighting adds depth to your wedding pictures by backlighting your photos. It can highlight architecture, plants and even your head table. It can be very subtle or over the top. It is the best, and often times, the most cost effective way to decorate. Talk to your DJ about Ambient or Theatrical Lighting.

Tip - Prepare Your Toast

How do you avoid inappropriate or embarrassing toasts? I think it was Mark Twain who said, "Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt." If you are an amateur and your plan is to “just wing it” in front of two hundred people, you just might end up with some unexpected results.
Professional Emcees are always well prepared and rehearse their material. Here are a few suggestions to help you to be better prepared for your toast:

• Narrow your notes down to bullet points
• Practice and rehearse aloud
• Limit your alcohol
• Keep it short and sweet
• Keep it positive. You want to leave them feeling good about themselves.
• Don’t forget to ask everyone to rise and join you in toasting the new bride and groom

Alternative Solution: If you are uncertain or feel that someone is not up to the task, invite them to speak at the rehearsal dinner.

Tip - How do you want to be remembered?

If you want to create a memorable event, try planning from a guest’s prospective. You will need to begin by asking yourself, “What do I want my guests to say after they leave my reception?” You may start by thinking back to a wedding that you have attended in the past. What stood out for you? Was it the flowers, food, venue, weather, dancing, music. etc…? Try to remember what you said to yourself as you left that wedding. This exercise alone will help you to prioritize your planning and budget based on a guest prospective… yours!

Ask yourself, “What type of wedding day are we going to create?” You may say things like simple, elegant, classy and fun. Then ask yourself what you want your guest to say after your reception, “Wow that really was a simple wedding!” or “Wow, that really was an elegant wedding!” or “Wow that really was a fun wedding!”

Taking a guest prospective with regards to planning your wedding day would be the first step to creating a lasting impression.
