You don't have to leave the country to have an amazing honeymoon. Consider visiting national parks, monuments, beaches, etc. You could save some money staying in the states and getting to know some new beautiful places!
Once the wedding is over, it’s time to relax and (let’s be honest) recover. After the big day, it’s honeymoon time – and frankly, neither one of you can wait. Just you, your newly anointed, and a few sunset cocktails – sound like a plan? Well then make it a good one. A wedding requires careful attention to planning, and so does the honeymoon. Budget, accommodations, crowds, locale – there’s a lot to consider. But if it’s too much to think about, don’t worry. We’ve done some thinking of our own, and have unearthed fabulous honeymoon options for the history-loving couple.

Usually, by no fault of their own, grooms are asked to take on limited responsibilities such as choosing their groomsmen, helping create the guest list, pick out a tux and show up! Seems simple enough. But these days, many grooms welcome the involvement and let’s be honest ladies, it’s their day too! Relinquishing some responsibility will be a burden off you and you may be pleasantly surprised with the outcome. There’s nothing that says a little oversight isn’t appropriate but treat your groom like the adult that he is and let him share in planning for the big day. There may be some discussions and compromises between you, but this could be your first time facing a challenge together and will prepare you for your life as a married couple. Tasks for your groom, in addition to the aforementioned (and obvious ones, like show up sober):
My husband and I are truly very fortunate. One of our wedding gifts was a trip to NEW YORK. And, now I completely understand why people confidently wear their I Love New York shirts. We chose to delay the trip for awhile due to work schedules, weather, etc. This flexibility allowed us several months to enjoy being newlyweds and get work time off. We also knew that right around the corner, a fun trip was waiting. It was like having 2 honeymoons, really. Our friends (who live there and gave us the gift) were amazing. They allowed us the opportunity to go to fabulous restaurants, great sites, fun attractions and the top of the Trump Tower (and, yes the view is quite spectacular, not to mention the other aesthetics). It was so nice to be able to have one on one time with my husband too. 
If you like to travel, I definitely suggest trips as gifts. Sometimes groups of people enjoy going in on a large gift, so I recommend picking a fun destination. I don't know how I managed to get soooo lucky in receiving this gift because I hadn't even thought of it, but I will tell you, I can't imagine my life having not gone on the trip. We got to get away for two honeymoons?? What a great first year of marriage!!
For your honeymoon, why limit yourselves to one location? Schedule several stops along the way or set up day trips to visit other places so that you have the best experience you can. If checking into multiple hotels throughout your stay doesn't sound that intriguing, maybe spend one of the first or last nights at a local destination you haven't visited before. Regardless, you should try working with a local travel agent to get the most out of your honeymoon experience.

Are you wondering when you will have time to write all those thank you notes? Write your thank yous on your plane ride to your honeymoon destination. Split up the writing job between you and your honey and you'll be ready to drop those in the mail when your plane lands.
Before taking a leave from your home for your honeymoon, be sure to stop your mail, your paper, have someone set your trash out and water plants if necessary. Make sure all your bills are up-to-date so there are no unexpected surprises upon return.
For the bride and groom who have everything, what do you register for? Nowadays many couples have already accumulated enough "stuff" that registering at your local department store seems silly. There are many new alternative to registration. Here are a few ideas:

We were married in San Francisco with only 16 of our closest friends and family in attendance. It was a 3 day event for our guests complete with a surprise Cable Car ride through the city right after the ceremony. We were able to do many small touches - handmade pillows for each chair for the ceremony (made with love by my sister Valerie!), candy treats and personalized M&Ms with movie quotes placed in rooms prior to guest arrival, a unique movie quote for each assigned dinner seat that I matched to the personality of each guest, and I found the greatest hanging test tubes to place flowers along the railing of the terrace overlooking the Baybridge! I had so much fun planning our wedding. We did everything our way and we loved it. Even our black cake was a hit! Of course I couldn't resist taking some of our own photos (hello I'm a wedding photographer: The Memory Journalists), but we had the great honor of having my friends Bethy B of True Love Photo and Matt B of NJB Photography take our pictures.
We just went on our honeymoon last month in December 2007 - a much delayed honeymoon. It was well worth the wait! For all those worrying about not having a honeymoon the day after your wedding - don't sweat it. You can spend just as nice a time having a picnic while driving along a desolate highway.
I loved planning our wedding so much (understatement), and being a wedding photographer myself, I meet brides all the time who have as much passion as I did about pulling off the best wedding of their lives.
