Trend - Money Dance

Many brides and grooms honor the tradition of the money dance at their wedding. Guests make an offering to dance with the bride or groom. This is a way of wishing good fortune on the bride and groom and helps them out financially. While many understand the history behind the money dance, for those that don't they may see it as "tacky". I suggest finding a way to make this "tradition" understood. You could possibly put it in the program or have the DJ announce the money dance, explaining briefly it's history.

Tip - Alleviate Music Spending

To help alleviate spending you can put together a mix CD to play during cocktail and dinner hour. You can have a DJ or band arrive after dessert to entertain for the remainder of the evening. This is assuming that your venue has speakers available or an adequate sound system you may be able to use.

Relive Your Engagement

My husband and I agreed on starting a great tradition. Each year, on the anniversary of the weekend he proposed, we will take a trip to where it happened. We got engaged in San Francisco and both love visiting the city when we get the opportunity. This year was a ton of fun. We visited the same places as on the day we got engaged and reflected on the past year. It is crazy to think how quickly time passes. We hope to keep this fun tradition alive regardless of busy schedules, kids (someday) and work obligations. The most fun part about this is we literally get to watch ourselves grow old in the same spot. We took pictures together on our engagement night (obviously) and our first visit. My husband already thinks in just one year, mind you, his hairline is receding and I feel like I've got some extra wrinkles, but just imagine these pictures in twenty years! I can't wait to keep track.

Soft, Supple Skin For Moi?!

I had to write this because I am not easily impressed by consumer products. I used to get my hopes up about things only to be let down when they failed me later. Recently, I was gifted a set of products by a friend who has been listening to my woes about my skincare products. She gave me this sweet little package from TTE Skin Care and let me tell you what... I LOVE IT! Aloe Vera is the base for each of their skincare products. I have been using the scrubs and lotions for about a week and can already tell a difference. My skin is clearing, smoothing and redness is dissipating. I am not in the business to promote just because. I wouldn't share this with you if I wasn't amazed! I am telling you about this so you ladies frustrated with your skin and looking for an answer before your upcoming wedding can check it out.

Disclaimer - Everyone's skin is different. We may have different skin types. Just because this worked for me I do not guarantee that this or any other product I enjoy may work for you.

Tip - Be Clear With Your Photographer

If you don't want to leave your reception to take additional pictures, be sure to clarify this with your photographer before the big day. Your photographer should ask you your preferences regarding picture taking. They will tell you when sunset is, the best time for pictures regarding lighting and ask you what shots you absolutely want included. Don't just say, "Whatever gets the best shots, you're the professional." You could regret this later when the photographer is continuously pulling you out of the reception for more photos. Keep in mind that this is your day and if you want to share in the festivities, be specific in saying, "We prefer to have all our photos done before the reception so we don't have to leave our guests" or "We are perfectly ok with taking 20 minutes for photos after our first dance." Whatever your preference, be specific.

First sightings (seeing each other before the ceremony) are another area where you need to be certain. Some photographers may suggest it for a few reasons: 1. Depending on the time of day you're getting married, it may be the best (or only) lighting. 2. This limits the number of post ceremony pics you need to do. 3. Doing a first sighting can take some of the pressure off you since there won't be guests eyes staring at you the first time you see each other. It can be a more intimate moment, captured by unobtrusive professionals.

Trend - Color Me Up

There's nothing that says all your bridesmaids need to wear the exact same dress! Having your bridesmaids in different color dresses really adds some flare to your wedding! If you are all about keeping some uniformity while punching up the color, pick a few of your favorite accent colors in the same style dress. If you really want to mix it up have each dress in a different style too. Your bridesmaids may appreciate this too since certain colors are flattering to certain skin types, hair colors, etc.Design feature provided by David's Bridal

Tip - Testing, Testing...

If you are creating a CD as your wedding favor for your guests, be sure to test them before giving them out. After the creation of each one just scan through the songs to make sure the CDs all play. You went through all the time and effort of purchasing the downloads or CDs of each song, creating the CD label, purchasing the materials and taking the time to create them, make sure your guests get to enjoy them!Photo provided by giftcds.com

Trend - All Mixed Up

Many brides and grooms have trouble picking the exact number of bridesmaids of groomsmen to make the wedding party equal. One usually has one or more on their wedding party side than the other. Why not mix it up? Bridesmaids and groomsmen don't have to send on their prospective sides. The most important thing is that they're a part of your wedding.Digital design provided by David's Bridal

Trend - Local Vendors Will Travel

If you live in one city but are planning to get married in another you may want to bring local vendors from your area to your destination wedding. The benefit in this is that if you have a hard time traveling to your venue frequently you can still meet with your local vendors as often as necessary to cover details. They will be your local connection to your destination venue!

Tip - Have A Plan B

If you are not planning to have an event coordinator at your venue on the day of, be sure to have a plan b for any element of the wedding that may need a back up plan. What will you do if you are hosting a bar and run out of alcohol early? What's your back up plan if your ceremony music set up fails? If you find out two days before that it could rain during your outdoor ceremony how will you keep guests (and yourselves) dry? Do you have an emergency kit in case a bridesmaid's dress rips?

We're not trying to scare you just make sure that you're properly prepared. ;)

Trend - Sticks & Stones

Using decorative sticks, twigs and branches give centerpieces, large arrangements and aisleway designs texture and creativity while saving money. River rock and polished stones can also be used as a design element combined with mentioned sticks or minimal florals creating a serene outdoor experience.

Tip - Ceremony Sound

If you are holding your ceremony at an outdoor venue, make sure to take into consideration the number of guests invited and how they will be seated. A few things to keep in mind:
1. Try not to place any guests directly behind where your bridal party will stand, people want to be able to see and hear you.
2. If you're not planning to have a DJ play your ceremony music, be sure to consider if you, your fiance and officiant should be miked. It's really a personal preference and you can ask your officiant to walk around during their introduction, which engages the guests.
3. Be sure to take note of any ambient noise that could be distracting during the ceremony and discuss ways to address it with your DJ or event coordinator.Photo courtesy of Allison Stahl Photography

Trend - Kick Off Those Heels

Provide inexpensive flip flops in your bridal colors for guests to kick off their dressy shoes and kick it up on the dance floor! They will thank you for the relief, your dance floor will stay packed and everyone will have a great time!Photo courtesy of Sharpe Photographers

Tip - Prevent Wilting Florals

If you are planning to do a first sighting (see each other before the ceremony) be sure to have a place to store your bouquet until the ceremony to prevent it from wilting. Some florists will provide you with a tissue lined box or water filled container for your florals for safe keeping to revive your bouquets.Florals by Blooms by Martha Andrews

Trend - Calligraphy Maps

Calligraphy maps detailing the location of the wedding ceremony and reception are a great added detail to include with your invitation. You can add in some fun locations that you and your fiance enjoy visiting or hot spots your guests should check out.Photo and map courtesy of A Lucky Orchid Wedding

Tip - Keep Your Guests Occupied

If you are planning to have pictures taken right after the ceremony be sure to have something to keep your guests occupied. The best thing to do is slip the bride and groom out the back door or hide them right away to ensure you don't get behind on taking pictures. You will see everyone shortly at the reception. Here are a few options, combine any together, for keeping your guests busy while awaiting your arrival:
1. Have music going for guests
2. Have appetizers passed or available
3. Create a small game card at each place setting for guests to see how well they know the bride
& groom; you could put the answers on the back--it would be a great conversation starter
4. A photo booth inviting guests to have their picture taken for the guest book
5. Dancers welcoming guests, doing routines and possibly teaching guests a quick move
5. Karaoke!

Trend - Update On Traditional Music

Many older songs are making a comeback with a modern band's remake. Pick some songs from your past that are important to you or older traditional songs that you like and search for their remakes on the internet. You may like the originals better, but you never know what you'll find! An example would be Christina Aguilera's take on Etta James', At Last.

Tip - Assign A Time Keeper

If you're not planning on having a coordinator on the day of your wedding, be sure to ask someone to help keep you on track. You will get distracted and lose track of time. If you planned to do a bouquet toss, garter toss, first dance, cake cutting, speeches, etc. it helps to have someone make sure those things stay on track. Your DJ/musician may be comfortable announcing when the time is here. Decide who your person will be before the day of.Photo courtesy of Sharpe Photographers

The Best Dressed

Recently, there was an awesome article in Brides magazine about choosing the best dress for your figure. And because they can say it SO much better than me I'm going to paraphase the article! Here are their suggestions for your "figure-fixers."

Petite girls: Choose slim fitted or a-line dresses. These will add height to your small frame.

Poochy stomach: A split-front dress will provide you with a slimming v-cut and makes your figure look slimmer and more narrow.
Broad shoulders: If you are like me you don't ever need to wear shoulder pads. So choose a halter dress to narrow your shoulders and make them look smaller.

Wide hips: Look for a dress with tiers. This will take the focus off your bottom half problems!Small bust: If you are a little smaller on top look for a dress gathering or pleating at the top.
Large bust: A lace-up or corset style dress well help you lock and load your upper half. Look for dresses that have decorative accents around your bust.
Boxy torso:Look for sculpted necklines and dramatic side draping to bring curves to your torso.
Voluptuous: For the well-rounded woman look for dresses that are snug under your bust and then just floats away. A goddess dress will look fabulous on you!

Now get out there and shop! There's a dress out there for you!

Trend - Smokin' Hot

Candles can add amazing light, creative ambiance and help set a romantic, welcoming mood. You can almost never have too many candles as long as they are properly secured. Use candle holders that not only house the candle but also the flame for safety. Candles can be used on tables, in outdoor lanterns, on food tables, on tables in a lounge area, to stage an exit.

Trend provided by Sharpe Photographers

Tip - Inform Vendors of Necessary Details

Be sure to inform vendors of any necessary details that could negatively impact the evening. If a guest or someone in the bridal party is allergic to a certain food, if there are relationship details that should not be brought to attention, if Uncle Paul has a tendency to overdo the drinks, maybe give the bartender a heads up.

Trend - Cork It

If you're having your wedding at a winery, ask the event coordinator or tasting room staff to start saving you corks. You can use the corks to hold table signs, place cards and add to the winery theme decor.Photo courtesy of The Knot

Tip - Assigning Family Duty

When you have a large family with many siblings be sure to find tasks for them so they feel included. Family members can be ushers, pass out programs, pin on groomsmen's bouttonieres, help the photographer find other family member's for pictures, introducing people for toasts, picking up or help picking out items for the wedding. There's plenty for family to do and they are there for you, so be sure to include them.

Trend - Saving A Place For Passed Loved Ones

Sometimes brides and grooms like to honor loved ones that have passed by leaving a single rose on an empty chair. You can also hang a card or set a card on the chair saying who the rose is in remembrance for.

Trend - Combined Traditions

Many couples marrying from different backgrounds are now combining their two traditions to create a fun, original wedding. Nowadays you can possibly see two ceremonies and many different traditions incorporated into the reception to make for a personal day that allows everyone to experience new things.Photo courtesy of The Memory Journalists

Tip - Vendor vs. Venue

If you already have certain vendors in mind make sure that you check with your venue to make sure that they will allow said vendor. Some venues only permit vendors from their preferred list.

Dynamite Site/Blog Interview - Wishpot

Christine is the lifeline of Wishpot for vendor relations, blogging and newsletters. We were able to ask Christine a few questions to learn a little more about her and Wishpot.

My favorite wedding trend right now is… I love color and so I love the trend of adding a little color to your day! Especially to your dress oh and of course the very popular trend of registering for your wedding online.

If I could get married anywhere in the world it would be… hmmm…I don’t think I would care it isn’t the ‘where’ it’s the ‘to who’ 

Three blogs I stalk besides Dynamite Weddings and my own are… I love Brooklyn bride, Darci with this Ring, Harmony Bridal Bar, It’s a Jaime Thing and Vow Weddings—oh wait that was more than three..

My first job was… hmm a tough one but I would say I started a child care service (only for after school hours) when I was 12.

The biggest lesson I’ve learned since starting in this industry… Oh my! I would say that it is so important to have passion for what you do!

Tea or coffee? Wine or beer? I looooove tea but I am head over heels addicted to coffee. And I can’t drink Beer- no wheat for me so it has to be wine. But I am partial to ciders.

My goal for my blog this year is… to keep discovering new amazing wedding resources for our members just like Dynamite Weddings!

3 things that are instrumental to a successful wedding are… tiny details it is all about the little things, preparation, and three to just have fun- it is your day and you can bet it will unravel in a unique way- just enjoy it.

The one item of clothing I can’t live without… hmm I love my seven jeans

The most exciting new advance in weddings has been… there are so many more options available to brides like being able to add anything to your registry and register online (shameless plug), or being able to turn to great wedding bloggers for inspiration.. and today there is so much variety to weddings you really can create a day that is as different as you.

One thing readers may not know about me… I live in Seattle.

My favorite wedding element (flowers, photos, the grub, linens, etc.)… well aside from the wedding registry  I love the flowers and Jaime of It’s a Jaime thing just posted about using silk instead of real flowers for your day.

The best website and/or blog for planning a green wedding… hmm I like earthly affair she is one of our wedding experts too!

I tend to blog… about things that are useful for nearly weds and of course things that when I see I immediately say out loud- Oh my I love that!

If my time wasn’t consumed writing this blog you all can’t live without, I would be… sleeping. I really should sleep more. I know I speak for other bloggers as well when I say there just aren’t enough hours in a day. But at the end of the day it is soooo worth it!

Thanks for sharing Christine!

Trend - Engaged For Life?

Many new brides are opting to not wear a wedding band. With so many new ring styles, including filigree and jewels along the sides of rings, many brides feel that the original engagement ring is "enough". Although this sometimes confuses more traditional folks into assuming you're still engaged, you have to do what feels comfortable to you. If a band adds too much, don't let your fiance spend on a ring you may not wear.

Tip - Review Your Playlist Carefully

If there are certain songs that you know you don't want to participate in at your wedding, like the Chicken Dance or anything that forms a Conga Line, be sure to review the playlist your DJ gives you. If you don't want to end up doing the Macarena or hearing a song that reminds you of your high school prom date, again, be sure to review the play list. Many brides say, "Oh, I'm sure it's fine; use your best judgment." Review your playlist!Photo courtesy of The Memory Journalists

Ready for any Emergency

I think we all pretty much know that you have to be ready for anything. I mean who knows what could happen on your big day? Good or bad. We have all seen those wedding stories involving everything from fainting brides to disappearing vendors. So in an effort to be ahead of the game I had my bridesmaids help me put together a "Bridal Emergency Kit."
Picture provided by mindyweiss.com

There are actually quite a few pre-made Bridal ER kits out there. You can find them here, here and even here at Target. What I did was read a great article I found at the Knot, divided up their suggestions amongst my bridesmaids and had everybody bring their stuff to the house the day of the wedding. I supplied the bag and we dumped it all in and I gave it to my maid of honor to bring to the church. It actually worked out great because we ended up needing those tissue's and hairspray! The key is to remember you aren't just providing this stuff for yourself. Make sure you have enough stuff for all your bridesmaids and mom's and anyone else you know will be hanging out with the bride.

Spotlight On Interview - Stephanie J Designs

We were able to steal a few minutes with Stephanie of Stephanie J Designs and ask her a few questions. Check out her answers and get to know more about her and her dynamite invitation company! If I had to choose another profession, I would be… I gravitate towards cake design & photography. I enjoy baking and experimenting with creative flavor combinations. I'm the go-to-girl for cakes when it comes to a family event or birthday bash. I'm self-learning photography as I capture images of my stationery work. I love how changing position or focus can capture a sparkle you could have missed. I have immense admiration and respect for the cake decorators and photographers I have the pleasure of working with.

My favorite style of invitation is… Anything that is outside the old standard of a 5x5 white square panel, a pearlized border and black thermography ... BORING! (Note: 13 years ago that boring 5x5 white panel was my wedding invitation!) To get my attention It's got to be unique and captivating. An invitation that sets the tone, defines a glimpse of the event & reflective of the couple themselves.

I got started in this business… Five years ago I left my big corporate job as a project/design/web manager to start planning a family and to launch a business. The single driving force behind leaving my job was when it came time to plan for the birth of my son, I knew there was no way I was working 70 hours a week for someone else. Although, the transition to custom stationery wasn't a smooth one - I went back and forth for months deciding on a single direction - custom stationery or painting murals - both of which I did on the side while working my full-time job. Once I was off doing both for a couple months (sort of testing the waters), I decided my natural ability is clearly design. I did one bridal show and was hooked! I love what I do and am inspired everyday by the creative ideas of my clients - couldn't imagine doing anything else.

Regarding lettering on invitations, I prefer… I am a font fanatic! I love to mix up scripts and serif/sans serif fonts. I'm stretching myself out of my design comfort zone and trying to work with three font combinations - it can be tricky but if done right you end up with a look that is smart & sophisticated! I try to stay away from all script invitations (normally I only recommend it for hand calligraphy invitations) - for the most part because I think they are extremely difficult to read. What's the point of having a fabulous invitation if your guests have to work at figuring out what the heck says?

The most invitations I’ve ever created for one event… 500. Oh, that was a crazy few weeks. They were a pretty complicated design too. Pocket fold, multiple layers, ribbon, and crystals (totaling 3000 overall!). Yikes.

The biggest trend in wedding invitations right now… Big, Bold, and the more Bling ... the better.

The event type that I get the most requests for invitations… Without a doubt, weddings. Weddings account for more than 90% of my business. The other 10% is comprised of social events, milestones (birthdays, etc.) and corporate business (logos, collateral, etc.).

The top accessory to use with invitations… Your voice, your personality. Not your moms or your in-laws. Yours - as a couple. It doesn't matter what color it is, or what embellishments you put on it - if it doesn't reflect you and your special day it's not yours.

My biggest piece of advice to couples choosing invites… You're only limited by your imagination. Be creative and adventurous with your stationery - go beyond what is expected. Give your guests a wow factor and set them up for an event they can't wait to be a part of. Use design elements that you've already selected to guide the design of your stationery - so that when you're left with a scrapbook or memory box of your big day all together it's one cohesive look.

Today I bought… Black, magenta & cyan toner, black & magenta image drums for the printer, paper order for August deliveries, Luzianne tea for making iced tea when I work today, beach towels for Friday swim days at my Mom's house, tents & goodies for our family backyard camp out on Saturday, a Dalmatian PEZ dispenser for my son (Wyatt) and a movie (The Other Boleyn Girl) to watch while working on artwork today.
