Cloud Nine - Pick Your Battles

So you made it through the stress of the planning and the big day and now you are home. And the reality has set in. Oh yes you love him but if he leaves his dirty socks on top of the coffee table one more time he is going to be VERY sorry. So what do you do? Scream? Ignore him? Kick him to the couch? It can be tempting to do all of these things but just remember: treat him how you would him to treat you. When it comes to "fighting" follow these few rules. 1) No name calling - don't call each other anything you would call each when you are NOT mad. You can't take those words back. 2) Pick your battles. Is it really worth starting a fight over the fact that he leaves the newspaper laying out all day? Probably not. Save your battles for the big stuff. 3) Don't go to bed mad. EVER. It's not worth it. You sleep terribly and you wake up mad. That's no fun! Work it out before you turn out the lights.

Ask Marvin- Overwhelmed By New Family

Dear Marvin,
I am feeling very overwhelmed by my “new” family lately! It seems as though my fiancé’s parents are having a hard time adjusting to the newest member of the family…me! I feel as though any time my fiancé and I make a decision regarding the wedding, they somehow find a way to take offense or issue with me. When I try to discuss the issue, they act as if they don’t know what I am talking about. It seems as though we are all having a difficult time relating to one another as well as adjusting to our new situation. This is just so frustrating and the last thing I need while trying to plan our wedding! How do I address the issue and reach a solution if nobody wants to talk about the problem?

Overwhelmed and Frustrated

Dear Overwhelmed and Frustrated,
Close your eyes, take a deep breath (in through the nose and out through the mouth) and think happy thoughts. This is a HAPPY time in your life. You have met your one true love and have the privilege of adding new members to your family. It sounds as if everyone (including you) needs to maintain perspective on the situation. Remember, this is YOUR wedding. You have complete creative control. Now, that being said, it is also important to remember that keeping those around you happy can be directly related to your happiness level. Perhaps there is a responsibility you could turn over to your soon to be in laws, like planning the rehearsal dinner (traditionally appropriate). Not only will it include them in the planning process, but it will tie up some of their time as well. In the end, make certain that all of your decisions are regret free. And, most importantly, give everyone involved a little time to adjust. In the meantime, keeping a positive outlook on the situation will help immensely and ensure you have lots of happy memories of this special time!

Birthday Bash & Charity Event

We would like to acknowledge Catriona Arcularius' amazing generosity on a day that was meant to be celebratory of her own life.
Catriona's 30th b-day bash and charity event was held March 28th, 2008 at Blue Goose, Loomis
Benefit- '4 the Babies' a Sacramento Crisis Nurseries charity
Participating vendors
Amazing services provided by:
Jeremy Underwood, Sharpe Photographers
Martha Andrews, Blooms
Michaela Rodgers, Plush Weddings
Steve Schon, Function 45 DJ
Sharri Black, CMC

A roast and fabulous celebration was held in honor of Catriona Arcularius's 30th birthday. Family and close friends took the opportunity to poke a little fun at Catriona's unique personality and quirks. Following this comical display and laugh out loud funnies at Catriona's expense, guests danced the night away to the best mix of music. The dance floor was lit by a chandelier and surrounded by ornate jewel trees, fabric hung from the tall rafters above, and all up lit with a teal glow. The Blue Goose turned out to be the perfect venue for this benefit bash that raised over $1,000 for the charity. The theme was anything but an old country barn hoedown. The modern lounge design was the perfect contract to this rustic barn.

Over $1,000 for charity! Kudos to all those that helped make the event so amazingly successful and to those that attended and were willing to give. Way to go!

A Bit Of Bella

The entire time I was planning my wedding I was looking for those little special touches I could include for little or no cost. One of the special touches I literally stumbled on (I can't even remember how I found it) was Bella Umbrella. And it was seriously one of the coolest idea's I had. Here's what it is.

These are two of the umbrella's that I rented for my wedding.
You just log onto the website, BellaUmbrella.com , and browse their hundreds and hundreds of umbrellas. The rental cost ranges from $10 to $30. If your order is under $100 they do add a $40 handling charge. I had no problem with that because I order 8 umbrella's. Once you have determined what umbrella's you like you can place your reservation. You pay 50% at the time of the reservation and the rest when they ship them to you. They ship them to you about 2 days before the date you need them in a box that you ship them back in the first business day after your event. This was probabliest the EASIEST thing I did for my wedding and it looked fabulous! And by the way I went searching for these umbrella's for ONE SPECIFIC PICTURE. And I got it!

Top Ten Things Every Bride Should Know

#4 Vendors can disappear!

I'm sure you've all heard some horror stories of vendors closing up shop with no notice and leaving you in the lurch. Watch those purse strings and make sure and pay by credit card so that you have documentation and have a recourse to get your money back!

Top Ten Things Every Bride Should Know

#5 - Take a sample invite to the post office before mailing.

Verify your invitations postage - don’t underpay and get your invites returned by merely slipping assumed postage on the envelope. Odd sized envelopes may need extra postage!

How to....Anything?

For all you amazing DIY’ers, do I have a website for you! Expert Village, The self proclaimed “World’s Largest ‘How To’ Video Site” is incredible. I couldn’t even begin to exhaust all of the topics available, but I did do my share of wedding related searches: wedding cake icing, hairstyles, self made bouquets and corsages, etc. Not to mention all of the non-wedding related DIY topics: playing the tambourine, refinishing hardwood floors, animal training, scarf juggling, etc. The list goes on and on! I would be surprised if you didn’t find whatever your DIY heart’s desire happens to be.

Check out this site and let me know which video “how to” is your favorite!

Trend - The Blessing Tree

The guest book now has competition -- the blessing tree. As they enter the reception, guests write a note to the newlyweds and hang it on the blessing tree. The style of the tree and the notecards should compliment the wedding theme. For a fall wedding, the blessing tree could be large, rustic twigs placed in a over sized vase with notecards in fall colors cut out in the shape of maple leaves.

Tip - Kids Meal Please

Does the caterer offer a meal option for children or a discount from the normal price? Often for wedding receptions with a large number of children you have the option of a separate buffet or plated meal that will be much more kid-friendly then Chicken Duxelle En Croute. Chicken fingers are a great alternative!

Tag You're It--Wedding Style

Tag You're It with a twist--make this one all about your wedding! You have to write a blog with 10 weird, random things, facts, habits, or goals about anything to do with your whole wedding process--anything from engagement to relationship to planning to day of is open territory.

At the end you're supposed to choose 10 people to be tagged, but for this version I'll tag all the B2B girls and challenge them to really think about their answers...maybe some of the random info will actually help some bride to be's surfing the site.

If you aren't a B2B girl so you can't share your own random tidbits here, leave a comment with one or two things about your own experience...or consider becoming a B2B Girl!

1) I got engaged in Italy, and didn't tell my mom until the next day (and only then bc I called home for Christmas and felt guilty), and didn't tell anyone else until we got back weeks later. I just wanted the moment to belong only to us--nothing wrong with that!

2) I had my first dress fitting the day before the wedding and picked up my dress 5 hours before the ceremony. I had my (fabulous) dress custom made, but after deciding on the dress design and ordering the material, I moved the wedding date up 6 months! Can we say problemo! But the designers somehow managed to pull it off on an impossibly short time line. I knew not to sweat the small stuff and learned not to sweat the big stuff--everything always works out one way or another.

3) I got extensions for the wedding...they turned out AMAZING and looked oh so au natural, but can you say PAINFUL!! Not so much the process of putting them in, more the sleeping on them. Ouch...won't be doing that again.

4) We had a 6 month engagement and I think it was more than enough time. My wedding turned out spectacular, I got to enjoy the highlights of wedding planning...and be done with the stress sooner too! Don't feel like you have to have a long engagement just to fit all your details in, so not true if you are organized.

5) I HATE wedding shower games. HATE, HATE, HATE. I threatened to boycott my own shower if any were present...just because you are getting married doesn't mean you have to be a cliche bride and LOVE it all...rock it your own way. No shame in that.

6) I did all the paper products myself (with my mom). Cheaper, more fun, not terribly time consuming, just how I wanted them and they looked professional. Not too shabby.

7) I am anti the humiliating ritual of calling out all the single ladies to the floor for the flower toss...it feels way too scarlet letter to me. So I ditched it and dedicated our bouquet to my groom's parents as it was their 30th wedding anniversary this year and they didn't get a party.

8) The best man was my grooms bro...and his toast was a DISASTER. I could sum it up in two words: drunken nonsense. At first I was livid, then I got over it. I learned that day that even in-law family is real family, and I suddenly had a lot more tolerance to forgive and forget just like I would with my own brothers (not that I don't reserve the right to rub it in every now and again). Funny-and really neat- how that happens.

9) I walked myself down the aisle. Blame it on one too many Bronte sister novels I read as a young and impressionable youth, but I was disturbed by the symbolism. I am not property, nor do I need to be spoken for, and didn't like the idea of being "given" away. I walked halfway down and met my groom in the middle and we walked to the alter together. It was the sweetest moment, and it was all ours. Everyone was aghast when I told them what I was going to do, but in the end everyone agreed it was lovely. Break with tradition if you want--its your day, do it the way that feels right for you.

10) Even though hubby and I had been together 4 years, something about being married has changed our dynamic. People say marriage is just a piece of paper, but we've found that it is SO much more in ways impossible to describe and impossible to imagine living without.

Trend - Creating Your Nontraditional Ceremony

You have scouted out the perfect ceremony site, and the both of you have agreed, you are going to exchange your vows outside of the church. You have chosen a nontraditional setting for your ceremony so why not choose nontraditional music? Holding your ceremony outside of the church gives you complete freedom to be as creative as you like. So have some fun. It is becoming more popular for brides and grooms to choose music that is unique to their individual personalities and tastes. It may be that there is a story behind their song choice or that the lyrics themselves tell a story. Just as a movie soundtrack has a musical score; you too can create the same type of theme. There may be a soft piano or string version of your first dance song that your DJ can play for your wedding march. DJs have the ability to be as creative as you need them to be.

Tip - Hollow to Hem

If you decide on a wedding gown with lace or beading around the hemline, always ask the consultant if the gown can be ordered "hollow to hem". This means that the consultant will measure you from your collar bone to where you want the finished hem to lay, and then order the dress for you in that length. There is usually an additional charge for this service (anywhere from $100 to $300), but it will save you money and time during the alterations process.

Top Ten Things Every Bride Should Know

#6 - Venues can hold multiple weddings per day.

How many events will be held at your venue in the days leading up to your wedding and after? Find out if you'll be running into other brides in the hallways. It's can be a bit awkward. Make sure that you will have ample time for vendor set-up/tear down and removal of gifts, flowers, etc.

Top Ten Things Every Bride Should Know

#7 - Be cautious: Vendors can refer other vendors for incentive.

* Some vendors employ the practice of referring other vendors for kickbacks (possibly a percentage of the sale, $50/referral, etc.)

* Some vendors charge other vendors to be on their preferred lists.
